One highlight of Expo Milano 2015 is the Gotthard Massif, designed by Netwerch AG from Brugg and realized by Ongaro Graniti & SA. A granite block of 24 tons from the Cresciano quarry, meticulous planning, highly-skilled hands and 2500 working hours were united to create the marvelous “Water Castle of Europe”, an installation presenting the Gotthard Massif and its four cantons - Valais, Graubünden, Uri and Ticino - as Europe's greatest water reservoir. Scrupulous attention to details and extreme precision during processing allowed Ongaro & Co SA company to realize the unthinkable: combine the details of a topographical map with the structure of the rock. The installation is located in the heart of the Swiss pavilion and it is part of the world exhibition “Feeding the planet - energy for life”. A closer look to the work shows the delicate contour lines of the Cresciano Gneiss replicating the peaks and the valleys. Traditional wooden viaducts - so called bisses - are recreated above the model. The visitors can activate the canal system to allow the water to run drop-wise onto the central relief and flow following the mountain landscape, towards the four rivers Reuss, Rhine, Rhône and Ticino. Their further course is visualized on the base of the model which is made of the Bodio Nero Gneiss.
